With the approach of Thanksgiving, I’d like to reflect on several of the association’s recent accomplishments and recognize the firms and individuals responsible for these successes. First and foremost, I want to thank our entrepreneurs and our community partners that participated in this year’s informative Knowledge Fair & Expo that was held at CNM’s Workforce Training Center. We owe a major thank you to our sponsors, especially to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) for being the title sponsor for the event. In addition to getting progress updates on their research, discoveries and achievements from the founders and CEOs of many of New Mexico’s most innovative life science firms – NTx, Spartina Biotechnologies, Pebble Labs, Prosel Biosciences, Bright Path Labs, BioFlyte, Inc., Sandia Biotech, T-Neuro Pharma, Circular Genomics, Fab Lab Hub — we enjoyed the presentations of two distinguished keynote speakers that truly captured our attention:
- Dr. Douglas Ziedonis, Executive Vice President for UNM Health Sciences and CEO of the UNM Health Systems discussed how Covid is bringing major changes to the healthcare industry as well as a series of initiatives being undertaken by UNM-HSC, including the expansion of its physical facilities and telehealth programs.
- Hannah Green, Senior Director of Advocacy and Strategic Alliances for PhRMA, discussed “Innovation, Investment and Partnerships in New Mexico.” She also discussed how PhRMA is working to drive Patient centered progress in innovation, affordability and access to life saving prescription drugs.
Other kudos go to behind the scenes members that supported the event, in particular, Wayne Savage for arriving early and covering the registration desk as well as helping me arrange tables for the exhibitors, TJ Cook for helping us secure space at CNM’s facility, Rick VanNess for overseeing our audio visual needs, the Delmarva Group’s JT Koffenberger for enhancing and distributing our marketing materials, Sue Prelozni for helping create the sponsorship slides, Bethany Gravell of the Kenney Group for helping us recruit Hannah Green and to Elizabeth Kuuttila for connecting us to Dr. Ziedonis.
In addition to our signature event, three of our members – Alex Koglin, Michelle Miller and Paul Laur, and I were able to give a presentation on the growth NM’s bioscience sector and the contributions of their firms to that growth at the NM Technology Council’s recent marque event. We owe a thank you to Deborah Breitfeld, the association’s president, for the invitation and the opportunity for me to man an exhibit table at its event (gratis). Deborah and I are constantly looking for ways that we can collaborate, including marketing each other’s events to our respective members.
In other news, the board and I want to congratulate Paul Laur, founder of Spartina Biotechnologies and Sarah Boisvert, founder of Fab Lab Hub (and several other initiatives), on their appointments to the New Mexico Bioscience Authority’s Board of Directors. As a member of BSA’s board since its inception, I was delighted to recommend them and know that they will be significant contributors to the state’s first public-private non-profit. Paul also serves on NMBio’s board of directors.
Healthy regards,
Greg Byrnes
